My research falls in the field of computer vision, multimedia, and machine learning. I am especially interested in leveraging big data to build intelligent systems for various emerging applications, including scene understanding, behavior analysis, multimedia content understanding, and visual information retrieval. Currently, I am also interested in the areas of compact visual descriptor, social media sentiment analysis, and holistic scene understanding. I have published 70+ papers in major journals and conferences, including PAMI, IJCV, TIP, CVPR, ICCV, IJCAI, AAAI and ACM Multimedia. My work has been recognized by Microsoft Fellowship 2007, ACM Multimedia 2011 Best Paper Award, Provincial Natural Science Award (2nd Class) 2015, MOE Technology Invention Award (1st class) 2016, and Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award (1st class) 2018.

I served as an area chair for CVPR 2021 and ACM Multimedia 2018-2022. I also served/is serving as an associate editor for Neurocomputing, Multimedia Tools and Applications, The Visual Computer, PLOS ONE, Frontiers of Computer Science etc., and a guest editor for ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology, IEEE Multimedia Magazine, Signal Processing, Neurocomputing etc. In addition, I served as a general chair of VALSE (Vision And Learning SEminar) 2017, a local/session/area chair for IEEE MMSP 2015, ACM ICMR 2014, IEEE VCIP 2014, ACM MMM 2015, IEEE ISM 2015, a TPC member for AAAI 2015, CVPR 2013, ICCV 2013, ACM Multimedia 2010-2015,and a chair of VAIG group for IEEE Multimedia Communication Technical Committee (2014-now). I have also served as a deputy director of the Youth Working Committee in China Society of Image and Graphics (CSIG), a deputy director of the Academic Working Committee in CSIG, a deputy director of the Granular Computing and Multiscale Analysis Committee in Chinese Association of Automation, a standing member of CCF Technical Committee on Computer Vision, a member of CCF Academic Working Committee, a member of AI Construction Advisory Committee of Electronic Information Education Steering Committee, and an evaluation expert of National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2017,2018 and 2019.

I am currently a Nanqiang Distinguished Professor at the Department of Artificial Intelligence, Xiamen University. I received my B.Eng. from Harbin Engineering University in 2005, and my Ph.D. from Harbin Institute of Technology in 2011. I worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Columbia University from 2011 to 2013. I am the recipient of the National Science Foundation for Excellent Young Scholars (2014), the National Ten Thousand Talent Program (2017), and the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars (2020).
